Emergency Lighting Testing Requirements

How Often Must Emergency Lights Be Tested?

Under NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, battery-powered emergency lights are functionally tested every month for at least 30 seconds and once a year for at least 90 minutes. Written records of the tests must be kept. Check your local code, because your fire authority decides which edition applies. Replace units that fail right away.

Emergency and exit lights are cheap and easy to neglect, and failed units are a common inspection finding.

The Monthly Test

  1. Press the test button on each unit, or use the panel switch.
  2. Check that the lamps stay lit for at least 30 seconds.
  3. Write down the date, unit location, result and your initials.

The Annual Test

  1. Choose a low-occupancy time, and warn occupants.
  2. Run the units on battery for at least 90 minutes.
  3. Check for dim or failed lamps by the end of the test.
  4. Allow time to recharge: batteries are not ready straight away.

Tips

An electrician can replace units and run the annual test. Add it to your schedule.
