Fire Protection Inspection Requirements

Updated November 6, 2026

How Often Do Fire Protection Systems Need Inspection?

Under common NFPA standards, fire extinguishers get a monthly visual check and annual maintenance (NFPA 10). Sprinkler systems have weekly to annual inspections and tests, plus a five-year internal assessment (NFPA 25). Fire alarms are generally inspected and tested at least yearly (NFPA 72). Your local fire authority decides which rules and editions apply.
